This wasn’t the vintage display that the scoreline suggests, but 4 – 0 sounds damn good all the same.
A Stern John hat trick in the second half, followed a Wright-Philips header just before Half time and gave Saints a resounding victory over Hull. The first half had been pretty even, (both sides pretty average) with Hull having 2 very good chances to go ahead early in the game, but missed them both. Saints also created some chances, with Bradley Wright Philips hitting the ball straight at the keeper when he really should have done better.
But he made amends just before half time when he headed in a cross from the impressive Hammill. That was such an important goal as it meant Hull who had looked ok in the first half had to change their gameplan having looked throughout the first half as if they had come for a 0 0 draw. Hull were very poor in the 2nd half, and when they failed to pick up john as he headed home from close range, (from another right wing cross from Hammill) the game was over. Hull’s assortment of experienced players, just didn’t look like scoring. Saints 3rd was a little fortunate, but the 4th was an absolute beauty, as John volleyed home from 25 yards. On the plus side, Great result and will hopefully give Saints confidence. Hammill was very good, especially when on the right (so why has he been on the left so often??). The defence looked more organised, and kept another clean sheet. But Burley does need to look at his team selection, as Saints only really came to life once Hamill was switched to the right. Also Euell had another game to forget, his first half display was truly awful and needs to be replaced, by Viafara and surely Saganowski deserves a run In the team in place of Wright Philips. I know some people will say how can you complain after winning 4-0, but Burley must be brave enough to make decisions even if we win, as Coventry away will be a much harder task. |
