Not the greatest game, but I suppose under the circumstances a win is a win. With John Gorman and Jason Dodd taking control of todays game it was just one change they made with Ostlund being dropped due to a tight muscle. Saints: Davis, Thomas, Powell (Skacel 63), Davies (Idiakez 45), Vignal, Hammill (John 75), Wright, Euell, Surman, Wright-Phillips, Rasiak. Subs: Saganowski, Bialkowski. Bury: Provett, Haslam, Futcher, Scott, Woodthorpe, Stephens, Baker, Barry-Murphy (Mangan 81), Buchanan (Dorney 84), Bishop, Adams. Subs: Hurst, Challinor, Anane. Referee: Stuart Attwell (Warwicks) Attendance: 25,449 (including 1,311 Bury fans)
A free kick to the visitors 30 yrds out after 2 minutes gave a stark warning to the St Mary's faithful as Baker clipped over the wall to hit the base of the post. Again 7 minutes in, Baker went clean through to to find Davis blocking his shot with the rebound hitting Baker and just missing the rigt hand post. Hammill looked lively down the right and constantly proved a threat to Bury, with the final ball letting him down. His consistency is improving every game and injecting some pace and skill to what often looks a plain Southampton side. Too many passes found their oponents and groans and shouts from the crowd did nothing to aid the side. Bury always looked a threat and were there to spoil any party Saints had planned. Davis had to watch an ambitious chip just clear his bar from within the area by Bishop and then had to tip over a header by Futcher. Half Time 0 - 0 Presumeably for an injury otherwise a strange substition as Idiakez came on for the extremely capable Davies with Wright dropping to right back. Saints looked more lively and Surman providing some nice runs to create space on the right. A shot was blocked ewith the rebound falling to Vignal to drive straight at Provett. Powell was not able to run off a thigh injury and was replaced by Skacel on 63 minutes, with Surman slotting into midfield, Euell dropping to centre back and skacel filling in at left mid. The breakthrough came on 71 minutes, with the ball falling to Surman and his drive being deflected past Provett. to take Saints into the lead. This prompted some response from the crowd which seemed to inject some life into the team finally, with Hammill letting rip from 25 yards to just clear the opponents bar. As one of the best players on the pitch he certainly got a rousing applause when he made way for Stern John with 15 minutes to go on the clock. Wright-Phillips moved to right mid, and with 11 minutes to go Saints were awarded a penalty when John was fouled. Rasiak stepped up to take it, but Provett saved and Rasiak tried to chip the goalie on the rebound to find it blocked and the rebound again falling to Rasiak who steered it past Provett from a tight angle. Idiakez then fired over from 25 yards and Skacel had a 30 yard shot stopped by Provett. Full Time saints 2 Bury 0 Saints reached the last 16 for the fourth time in six years and go through to Monday's fifth round draw on BBC and Sky Sports News at 1.30pm. |
