A quick look around the various Saints forums shows that there are some that are looking forward to the new season. I have to confess to being jealous. I’m really struggling, more than almost any season I can remember, to be confident about this season. I do understand that the current position of clearing out the high earners is necessary, and would have been done whoever had been in charge. But I just wonder where it will stop. I’m pleased to see youth given a chance, albeit by necessity, but there is no substitute for experience. Up front, although we have an abundance of options, we seem to be preferring the youngsters to Rasiak, John or Saganowski. This I understand has caused some internal unrest. With suggestions all 3 are available for sale. I do hope we can keep at least one of these guys, because although the youngsters, look good on the ball, I worry if they are strong enough to put up with the physical approach of the championship defenders they will meet. At the back, a quick look at squad pics on the official site, tells its own story. Chris Perry, Andrew Davies, and Wayne Thomas the only recognised defenders there. Chris Perry is 35 and surely won’t play every game. Andrew Davies is still missing injured and Wayne Thomas has not looked the part in pre season (or last season come to that). We can add to the list Svensson, who would be a great asset if he stays fit, but after 3 or 4 years out, there is no telling what this season will bring for him. The other 2 are Lloyd James and Oliver Lanchester, who have no experience at this level, but have looked promising when they have played in pre season. I hope plans are in place to bolster this area, as a couple of injuries and we will be very short there.
