Saints 0 Barnsley 0 Alarm bells must be ringing around St Marys, and if not they should be. Another poor home result means Saints have taken just 2 points from their first 4 home games. Another Record low crowd were treated to a boring affair, where the young Saints side again played some nice football at times, but all in the wrong places. Barnsley’s keeper wasn’t worked at all, with any shots we did produce being tamely shot straight at him. In fact if Barnsley hadn’t missed an open goal at the end things could have ended even worse for us. If “total football” is neat pointless passing in your own half, then we’ve mastered it. On the plus side the defence looked more organised with 2 experienced players playing in the centre of defence, but there was little to cheer elsewhere. IMO, the insistence on sticking to a system that isn’t working, really isn’t helping. It wasn’t until there was just 10 minutes to go did the manager finally try something new and play 2 up front. Home games surely cry out for a more attacking 4 4 2, than the system we play which is some sort of 4 2 2 11, which appears much better suited to away games. Saints are in real trouble, because they need the fans to come in to help the finances of the club, but in truth they won’t be coming back, in fact they will drop if we see many more displays like today! Saints need to stop talking about “total football” and “revolutionary coaching set up”, admit things aren’t working and try to win some football matches.
