What is going on…… With time to reflect on the events of Saturday, Saints fans are asking what is going on at our club. The master plan, of playing a team of inexperienced youngsters, without the physical presence to hold their own in the Championship, lead by a manager with experience of the lower leagues of Dutch football. A plan which many thought would never work, but some were prepared to give a go, is unravelling before our eyes. The performance on Saturday was as woeful as anything we’ve seen, when you consider that we gifted 3 points to a poor Watford side, that hadn’t won away from home for ages. It’s not just the 3 points, it’s the manner of the defeat which is so worrying. The team had 2 weeks to sort out the defensive mess from Coventry but no lessons seemed to be learnt. We continue with a system that doesn’t seem to work at home, playing players out of position, and even during the game, the manager seem to not want to change, to try something else. I’ve never seen fans leave before half time before. If the board think that it’s financially sensible to just cut costs with no consideration for the fans, then they are not the clever businessmen some would have us believe. To be financially astute you surely need to be looking at your income as well as your outgoings. If the echo is to be believed then income is £100,000 down per match at St Marys, based on the lower average crowds of this year as opposed to last. Although Saturdays attendance was higher, with the current disillousionment among saints fans, unless something changes fast these numbers will drop further and make a mockery of the business plan based on just cutting costs. The calls for Saints fans to come to St Marys from supporters groups etc, are all very well, but it has to be a 2 way thing. Some how the club have got to find a way to capture the imagination of the missing fans. Playing a team of inexperienced players clearly isn't going to do |
